Gray and Company Inc. was started in 1973 by brothers Paul and Phil Gray as Gray Skies Painting. Another partner joined the company in 1974 and the three spent the next several years painting in the new residential market. In the late 1970’s the company began involvement in small commercial projects and then in 1981 ventured into industrial projects. In 1983 the partnership split and Paul and Phil Gray incorporated the business.
The company focused its attention on commercial projects of varying sizes through the 1980’s as well as started an industrial painting division. One of its earlier industrial projects was the interior and exterior painting of a 5 million gallon ground storage reservoir in Topeka, Ks. During this time the company took on several other major projects such as the renovation of the Kansas Statehouse House of Representatives Chamber and the 1985 expansion of the State Correction Facility at Lansing, Ks. In the late 1980’s the company teamed with a local designer and remodeled several luxury coaches for the Santa Fe Railway.
During the 1990’s the company changed its name to Gray and Company Inc.
Each year sales increased as the company covered a larger geographical area and established contacts with contractors across Kansas and Missouri. Industrial painting projects and large commercial projects became a mainstay for the company during this time. Gray and Company Inc. provided painting and wall covering for the initial Harrah’s Casino in Mayetta, Ks. in 1994 and the Expansion in 2004.
Since 2000 Gray and Company Inc. has continued to grow in the types and size of the projects it addresses. Company management is dedicated to improving project schedules and providing safe and quality oriented painting services. Currently Gray and Company Inc. completes hundreds of projects each year with project sizes ranging from $5,000 to $800,000.
The future has company management looking at further expansion of its geographical area as well as expansion of the services it provides. Along with the standard painting and wall covering service, the company provides sandblasting, water-blasting, concrete grinding, special coatings, containment coatings and systems, seamless floor coatings, and manhole coatings.
Gray and Company Inc. is proud of the fact that it provides a safe and caring workplace for its employees. Over one half of the current work force has been with the company over 10 years with many over twenty years.
A new generation of management personnel has come on board in the person of Walker Gray. This insures that the company’s commitments will be met with the same attention to detail and quality as in the past. Matthew Gray provides oversight of some field operations ensuring the company’s positive field attitude and attention to safety continues. Paul and Phil Gray are dedicated to seeing the company continue to flourish under future management in the decades to come.
